Soul diva Diana Ross was given a prison sentence yesterday after admitting drink-driving.

Ross must spend two days behind bars as her punishment for being stopped by police in Arizona a year ago when she was more than twice the legal limit.

The R'n'B diva phoned a plea of no contest to driving under the influence into a Tucson court from New York. Two related charges were dropped.

Ross, 59, must serve her sentence by March 9 and also carry out a year of unsupervised probation.

The singer - whose hits include Love Hangover and Chain Reaction - was arrested on December 30, 2002, when a driver told police a car was travelling the wrong way along a Tucson street.

Ross told police she had gone out to rent a video and denied she had been drinking.

'I noticed her eyes were watery and bloodshot,' said arresting Officer Sullivan.

The officers tried to test if she was drunk by asking her to stand on one leg and count to ten but she could count only to seven before falling over and laughing.

The singer could not write out the alphabet and was two hours out when she tried to tell the time from her watch.
