Crozier's £1m pay revealed as postal strike talks resume

Big earner: Adam Crozier received more than £1million in the past year

The chief executive of the strike-hit Royal Mail has been paid almost £1 million in the past year.

Details of Adam Crozier's pay packet emerged today as talks resumed with a view to ending the bitter dispute between Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union.

Five days of action have been held already, with two all-out strikes planned for Friday and Monday.

Mr Crozier was paid £995,000 in 2008/9 - £633,000 in salary, £139,000 in bonuses, £17,000 in further benefits and £206,000 as a cash supplement in place of a pension payment.

He has banked £2.4million in performance bonuses and £ 3.6million in pay since taking over as chief executive in 2003.

Royal Mail management and the CWU were today considering proposals from TUC general secretary Brendan Barber to end the strike.

Leaders of the CWU and bosses from Royal Mail spent the weekend considering the proposals. Fresh stoppages are threatened unless there is a breakthrough in the next few days.

Up to 60million items are thought to be stuck in the post after three days of action last week.

Royal Mail hopes to clear this by mid-week but there could be more strikes in the run-up to Christmas if no agreement is struck.
