Cold snap threatens transport gridlock

Freezing temperatures will continue to grip London this week, threatening chaos to road and rail services.

Temperatures are set to fall as low as -4C by Wednesday, with strong northerly winds making it feel colder.

Forecasters predicted possible snow showers in north London.

The cold snap has prompted fears of a repeat of the transport problems of January last year. The Highways Agency has told drivers to wrap up warmly and ensure they have food and water in their vehicles.

Gritters were out in force where the worst weather was expected last night.

The AA warned that the combination of today's morning rushhour, the end of half term and icy conditions could bring severe delays.
