Cargo jet in mayday call

13 April 2012

A JUMBO jet made an emergency landing at Heathrow airport after a mayday call on a transatlantic flight.

The Korean Airways cargo plane issued the call over the Bristol Channel when a fire warning light flashed on in the cockpit.

The three-man crew diverted to Heathrow, the nearest airport which could cater for an emergency landing.

The Boeing jet with a cargo of cattle was en route from Chicago to Brussels when the emergency occurred.

Planes due to take off from Heathrow were temporarily halted to allow the cargo plane to land without delay.

Fire trucks and ambulances were on stand-by as the plane came into land, but the flight touched down safely.

Heathrow called it "a textbook emergency landing," and said it caused no real delays.

Korean Airways said the crew had followed procedure and were concerned cattle may have been "spooked" by a fire on board.
