Betty boobs with sequins

Laura Craik13 April 2012

Sometimes, you can be a little too gimmicky. The strategically-placed gold sequin disks certainly looked good on Betty Jackson's catwalk, but they were mighty slippy. One model struggled to keep upright as she slid on one in her high heels but that was the only blip in Jackson's show.

"Don't You Want Me?" sang the Human League - and the answer was: Very much. Betty Jackson may not be the youngest, hippest name on the London Fashion Week schedule, but her dependable brands of clothing cannot be overlooked. A designer of more than 20 years standing, she has recently found favour with a new generation, dressing celebrities such as Melanie Blatt and Sophie Ellis Bextor. Neither made it to this morning's show, but faithful friend Jennifer Saunders did. She was joined by Leah Wood, who usually models in the show but had decided to take a break this season.

For autumn 2003, Jackson served up a mixed bag of trends that you'd be hardpushed to attribute to any era. While the rest of London Fashion Week is drowning under a wave of Sixties nostalgia, Jackson knows her core customers are more forwardthinking. In burnt autumn colours, orange, brown and russet - she served up a collection laden with textures. Cable-knit sweater dresses were a key, as were roughedged fur gilets, leather minis and fleece jumpers. Everything came embellished with diamante: bold brooches, headbands and sash belts provided a glamorous touch, although the styling was a little too reminiscent of cult Italian label Marni for comfort.

Although this was a mostly slick collection, there is one trend we don't think we'll be rushing to buy into, and that's the snood. It was never a good idea the first time round, in the Eighties, and it still isn't now. If model Liberty Ross can't manage to make an orange hood look fabulous, then what hope is there for the rest of us?
