Barbican festival moves east

THE Barbican is moving into the East End with a festival of live music at venues it has never before visited, it was announced today.

The Barbican Big Summer will see performances at Hackney Empire, Victoria Park and Gillett Square next to the Vortex Jazz Club.

Estrella Morente, a flamenco singer, Argentinian band Café de los Maestros and Cuban musicians Orquesta Aragon and Los Van Van will take part. And orchestras Leipzig Gewandhaus, New York Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw and Los Angeles Philharmonic will perform residencies. Theatre director Peter Brook will bring his new work on the life of Sufi sage Tierno Bokar.
