Bang your own drum at Brazil festival on the South Bank

Party: a drummer from AfroReggae
12 April 2012

Two thousand people are expected to join a giant jamming session at the Southbank Centre this weekend with Brazilian musicians who have swapped drug-dealing for drumming.

The public are invited to bring their own instrument - or even make their own drum - for the Saturday session by musicians from AfroReggae, a social project founded in the Rio de Janeiro favela (shanty town) of Vigário Geral during gang wars 17 years ago.

It gives young people an alternative to working for the drug barons who dominate the area. Those taking part agree not to smoke or drink and abide by a tight discipline code.

Free shows take place from tomorrow to Sunday as part of the Festival Brazil season. Visit www.southbank centre.co.uk
