Baggage handlers walk out again

Baggage handlers at Gatwick Airport today walked out in a second 24-hour dispute over working conditions and the suspension of a union shop steward. Employer Servisair has been forced to draft in extra staff in an attempt to prevent huge disruption to flights. Managers are having to cart luggage onto aircraft.

A spokeswoman for airport operator BAA said: "We have

made contingency arrangements to ensure there is no disruption." Early flights ran smoothly.

A Transport and General Workers Union spokesman said there was "solid support" for the strike.

It has ordered two more - each of 12 hours - for next Wednesday, 6 October, and Friday 8 October.
