Aung San Suu Kyi detention hopes are raised

Appeal: Burma said Aung San Suu Kyi broke the terms of her house arrest
12 April 2012

Lawyers for Aung San Suu Kyi are optimistic that Burma's highest court will overturn an 18-month extension of her house arrest.

The court began hearing the case today. The 64-year-old opposition leader's detention was increased after an American intruder swam uninvited to her home.

Her sentence would ensure she cannot participate in Burma's first elections in two decades that will be held this year. She has been banned from attending court.

"We are very optimistic. The law is completely on our side," said Suu Kyi's lawyer, Kyi Win.

British Ambassador Andrew Heyn said the government fully supported Suu Kyi's appeal.

"Our position remains that Suu Kyi's house arrest and the detention of all political prisoners is unjust and we call again on the government to release her and all political detainees without condition," he said.
