Arsonist guilty of eight murders

A man was found guilty today of eight counts of murder after a firebomb attack wiped out three generations of the same family.

Shaied Iqbal, 26, was convicted at Leeds Crown Court.

The jury was continuing consider its verdicts on two other men accused of the murders.

Five young girls and three adults died after fire swept through their home in Osborne Road, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, on May 12 last year.

The girls, their mother and uncle died in the house. Their grandmother died in hospital from her injuries after she leapt from an upstairs window.

The jury at Leeds Crown Court heard how petrol bombs were thrown through the windows of the house.

Iqbal, of Springdale Road, was charged with murder along with Nazar Hussain, 24, of Dryclough Road and Shakiel Shazad, 23, of Gledholt Road, all Huddersfield.

All three men denied the murder charges.

They also denied conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life.

The victims were: Tayyaba Batool, 13, Rabiah Batool, 10, Ateeqa Nawaz, six, Aneesa Nawaz, two, Najeeba Nawaz, six months, their mother Nafeesa Aziz, 35, and their uncle Mohammed ateeq-ur-Rehman, 18. Their grandmother, Zaib-un-Nisa, 54, died from her injuries a week later.
