Arena plans racecourse casino

Robert Lea12 April 2012

HORSERACING group Arena Leisure is to push ahead with plans to build a hotel and casino at Windsor racecourse. The company is 40%-owned by Trevor Hemmings, the leisure multi-millionaire who owns Blackpool Tower and hopes to capitalise on the resort's conversion into a 'Las Vegas of the North'.

Chief executive Ian Penrose said that as a result of the Budd Report heralding a relaxation of Britain's gambling laws, Arena plans to expand Windsor and Wolverhampton, which are two of the six courses it owns.

Arena reported a £6.1m loss for 2001 - similar to the year before and mostly related to its investment in attheraces, the new Sky TV and internet horseracing platform that is set to transform the turf for punters and armchair viewers.

The company pays no dividends.
