10 killed in US pile-up 'like end of the world'

Wreckage: at least a dozen cars and six lorries were caught in the pile-up on Florida's Interstate 75
13 April 2012

AT least 10 people were killed and 18 were injured in a pile-up on a Florida freeway after drivers were blinded by fog and smoke from a brush fire.

Rescuers struggled to find the victims in the wreckage of at least a dozen cars and six lorries strewn over almost a mile of Interstate 75, south of Gainesville.

Steven Camps, a local resident, was driving home when he was drawn into the pile-up before dawn yesterday. "You could hear cars hitting each other. People were crying. People were screaming. It was crazy," he said. "It looked like the end of the world."

Mr Camps said his car was hit twice but he was able to jump out and take cover at the roadside.
Police think arsonists may have started the brush fire.
