The first ever artificial intelligence Prom is set to take place at Battersea Arts Centre this weekend.

The new work by Jennifer Walshe, entitled They Go People and Person, was written together with a “folk-rnn” (Recurrent Neural Network), an online platform specifically made to generate folk music.

The network, created by Bob Sturm and Oded Ben-Tal, is trained on transcriptions of folk music, and allows users to compose a tune at the press of one button.

For They Go People and Person, Walshe trained the rnn with a body of gothic literary works before inputting her own words into the software. In response, the technology formed a unique composition that will be heard at the Prom on Saturday.

Walshe’s piece is one of a number to be performed at the Battersea Arts Centre Prom, alongside Crewdson & Cevanne, Oliver Coates and Kit Downes.

The event will be a standing only with tickets available on the day for £6, bbc.co.uk
