Bromley is a beneficiary of a £221m Mayor of London initiative to improve some of the capital’s high streets. The south-east London suburb’s tired town centre is getting a facelift, with a new quarter that mixes residential, leisure, shopping and the arts.

The £90m St Mark’s Square scheme, due for completion next year, will bring 200 private and affordable apartments set around a new piazza and performance space, a multiplex cinema, hotel, cafes and restaurants.

Hampton Grange, on the edge of the town centre, is a redevelopment of a listed convent in 10 acres of parkland bordering a golf course.

New detached houses and apartments have been built in the gated grounds, while larger apartments for downsizers are for sale in the refurbished mansion at the centre of the development. Prices from £395,000. Call Bellway on 0845 257 6062.

Bromley is London’s largest borough - 59 square miles, most of which is green belt running into Kent and Surrey - and has 20-minute train links to central London.
