Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp believes Manchester United would not represent a step-up for in-demand striker Harry Kane.

The England captain has ignited rumours of a potential imminent exit by refusing to rule out a move away from Tottenham, insisting he will not stay just "for the sake of it".

Standard Sport understands that Kane is on United's summer shortlist, though Spurs are thought to have no interest in selling the 26-year-old - even with a potential transfer fee of £200million being reported.

Spurs are adamant they will not sell their prolific talisman to a Premier League rival, but the club do have a recent history of selling their best players to United; Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Carrick both completing moves in the past.

However, where United were the dominant force when those transfers occurred, Redknapp - speaking to talkSPORT - believes the playing grounds are now far more even.

“Harry Kane is a special player, he’s the best centre-forward certainly in the Premier League and - of his type - I don’t think there’s a better centre forward anywhere," Redknapp explained.

“Okay, he’s not [Lionel] Messi, he’s not [Cristiano] Ronaldo, but as a centre-forward that does what he does, there isn’t anyone better.

“He would be a great fit for Man United, he’d be a great fit for any team… but Man United at the moment are not better than Tottenham. I wouldn’t say there’s much between them, both teams are trying to get into the top four.

“Whether Real Madrid or Barcelona came in, he might fancy a move like that one day.

“But at the moment he belongs to Tottenham, and unless Jose Mourinho and Daniel Levy decide to will cash in if it’s a crazy offer and rebuild the team with that money, unless Jose says, ‘I’ve got three players here we can sign and build a better team with’, then I’m sure he’ll stay at Tottenham.”
