Patisserie des Reves, Marylebone

You can hardly ignore something called the bakery of dreams, and dreamy it is. Pick up some Paris-Brest bicycle-inspired choux pastries.

43 Marylebone High Street, W1; lapatisseriedesreves.com/uk

Aux Merveilleux de Fred, Clapham

The days-old Northcote Road outpost of this French patisserie does two things — brioches and meringues — and it does them well. Join the queue.

55 Northcote Road, SW11; auxmerveilleux.com

Paul A Young, Fitzrovia

Really, where chocolate is concerned, this man can do no wrong. This spot at Heal’s opened just before Christmas. Try the truffles.

The Heal’s Building, 196 Tottenham Court Road, W1; paulayoung.co.uk

Dum Dum Donutterie, Shoreditch

Croissant doughnuts galore and classic doughnuts with only 6g of fat. Opened this morning.

Unit 31, Box Park, 2-4 Bethnal Green Road, E1; dumdums.co.uk

Balthazar Bakery, Covent Garden

Located bang next door to the restaurant. Make a note of the lemon drizzle, Chelsea buns, and pains aux raisins.
