Five things Fay Maschler ate this week

Our restaurant critic is given a present of meringues and tries out new Hackney restaurant Mayfields
30 October 2013

1. Thrilled at being given swirling, whirling meringues with raspberries and cream (illustrated) made by Reg’s grand-daughter Nell, aged 12, the very same age I started cooking — by making meringues.

2. Eating with my blogger friend Chris at Mayfields in Hackney, click, click, click go our phone cameras. A star turn from Matthew Young’s agile menu is cod with lardo, seared leeks and cauliflower, chardy leaves rendered as green Cellophane and glistening black olive sauce.

3. Both small birds and conversation give Good Game at a Fortnum & Mason boardroom lunch prepared by team Mark Hix. Keen shot Pippa tucks in.

4. From little acorns mighty jamon de Bellota grows. The defining oleic fleeciness of a plateful at the new Drakes Tabanco is offset beautifully by Oloroso direct from the barrel.

5. Oxtail stew cooked lovingly for a friend from my book Eating In (try Amazon).
