AL DESKO: Gourmet Burger Kitchen ‘Windsor’

What: Gourmet Burger Kitchen ‘Windsor’

Where from: £11.95 at GBK branches across London, gbk.co.uk

Taste assessment: Is there anything that can’t be tied in to the Jubilee or the Olympics? GBK’s elite new burger (definitely not desk friendly) uses well-bred, well-hung meat from the Royal Farms in Windsor, which is apparently in short supply, so it will only be available throughout the summer. The mixture of chucksteak, short rib and brisket is finely minced and has a rich, aged flavour, succulently pink on the inside, nicely barbecue-charred on the outside. Mustard mayo offsets it nicely, but sickly chipotle ketchup is best avoided. This is a very good burger, as reflected in the price, but I’d prefer something less sweet – and more upper-crusty, perhaps – than the brioche bun.
