Red Bull Soapbox Race set to return to Alexandra Palace for 2019

Red Bull's eccentric Soapbox Race is returning to London for another year, with tickets now on sale.

The Wacky Races-style derby, which sees amateur drivers race in homemade soapbox vehicles, takes place once again at Alexandra Palace, this year on Sunday July 7.

Teams will compete by hurtling themselves and their creations around the 430m course using nothing but the power of gravity — meaning no engines or pedals are allowed.

As always, the judging criteria is based around three things — speed, creativity and showmanship — so while the first to cross the finished line will fair favourably, there are other elements for contestants to be aware of.

Organisers say judges will be looking for riders who show a little more personality, as well as outrageous and fun carts — we're guessing there will be plenty of Brexit-themed creations this year.

More than 20,000 people are expected to attend the event in north London, which will run from noon until 4pm.

Tickets can be purchased via the Red Bull Soapbox official website and cost £25.44, or £14.84 for those under 25.

Red Bull has held more than 100 soapbox races around the world since the original in Brussels in 2000, covering all corners of the globe from Australia and South Africa, to Jamaica and Italy.

Sadly for those looking to compete in 2019, it’s too late to enter the event — but there’s always next year.
