University Challenge team fail to guess The Clash, George Michael and The Cure in awkward music round

The Oriel College Oxford team failed to name a selection of well-known tunes

For many University Challenge viewers, the music round offers a haven of easy answers away from the endless questions on particle physics – especially when it’s a Pop round.

But one team proved they were more adept at the academic topics as they struggled to name a selection of well-known hits.

The Oriel College, Oxford, team were asked to identify the names of three bands or artists who used the famous ‘Bo Diddley beat’ in their music.

First up was The Cure’s 1985 hit Close To Me – and while the team agreed that it wasn’t Radiohead, they incorrectly guessed Modest Mouse.

Next up was punk legends The Clash with their 1977 version of I Fought The Law – which the team couldn’t even offer a guess for.

The final song was perhaps the easiest of all – George Michael’s Faith, a song that reached #2 in the UK charts, and was the best-selling single of 1988 in the States.

But instead of answering George Michael, the team leader claimed it was Michael’s old group Wham! meaning that they didn’t get any points at all.

Twitter was, of course, not impressed.

Still, at least it made a nice change from the usual classical rounds.
