After last week’s episode of University Challenge saw a contestant with the ‘best surname ever’, this week Twitter found a new thing to get all excited over.

The latest round of the quarter-finals saw Liverpool University compete – and one of the team members proved particularly popular.

Medical student Ed Bretherton was branded a ‘hottie’ by one viewer, as Twitter users swooned over the man who proved that “brains and beauty CAN combine”.

Originally from Bampton in Devon, the Liverpool student provided a major distraction during the typically tricky quiz show.

One viewer even said that the contestant was giving off a ‘Breakfast Club vibe’, referencing John Hughes’ classic Eighties film.

Best of all, Liverpool managed to beat Imperial with a healthy 55 point lead – meaning that Bretherton will once again be gracing our screens later in the series.

Here’s hoping viewers have enough time to get their breath back before the Doctor returns for the next round.
