The X Factor spin-off series The Xtra Factor will not be renewed for 2017.

Instead, the main show will be supported by additional content for online, with ITV claiming the move is not related to the performance of recent hosting partnership Rylan Clark-Neal and Matt Edmondson.

“ITV's strategy to focus their efforts on digital means The Xtra Factor on linear television has come to its natural end,” says Richard Holloway, managing director of Thames TV.

“We've had great fun making the show and would like to thank Rylan, Matt and Roman [Kemp] for their fantastic and entertaining work on the last series.

“We now look forward to focusing on making great content for our social platforms in support of the main show.”

The Xtra Factor was relaunched in 2016 as a live show presented by Clark-Neal and Edmondson.

Rylan, whose career began when he entered the X Factor, posted a tribute to the show on Twitter, saying: “After an amazing series I just want to say what an amazing honour it was to finally host The Xtra Factor alongside the lovely Matt and naughty scamp Roman.

“It was always a one year gig (LOLS) and a full 360 for me and I’m grateful I had that opportunity.”

Referencing the other multiple presenters of the show over the years, he added: “I propose a wake alongside Matt, Roman, Rochell [Humes], Melvin [Odoom], Sarah[-Jane Crawford], Matt [Richardson], Caroline [Flack], Olly [Murs], Konnie [Huq], Fearne [Cotton], Holly [Willoughby] and Ben [Shephard] where we can all wear black and mourn as one.

“God bless Xtra and all who sailed in her. Sleep well girl x”

Edmondson also shared his thoughts about the show, writing that it was “the most fun I’ve ever had at work” and adding that it was his “dream job”.
