The Grand Tour: Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May announce huge shake-up

The next series of the show will be entirely on location

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May waved an emotional goodbye to The Grand Tour tent as the final studio show was released on Friday.

The final episode of the third Amazon Prime Video series marked the end of an era for the car-mad trio as they made a break with a studio format.

The scrapping of a tent for their show had been confirmed when the fourth series was announced last year, but final scenes released on Friday banished the Bake Off-style marquee to the big junkyard in the sky for good. The new format will also spell an end to audience tickets for the show.

Clarkson, Hammond and May will continue with a new format, which will take them on epic road trips across the world. These will be filmed entirely in-vehicle and on location.

“We have some good news, we’re not stopping,” Clarkson told the audience at the end of the episode. “The show as you know it is ending…the audience…the track…

“Although the tent has gone, The Grand Tour goes on. So while it’s not goodbye from us, it is good bye from the tent…anyone want to buy a tent?”

The final episode also featured Clarkson’s emotional ode to the Food saloon car, which he put his “heart and soul into writing”.

Twitter users were amused as they tried to work out if “#amazonshitcarshow” was a deliberate viral hit or not, with one reading less than complimentary.

In a promotional clip shared ahead of the show’s launch, Hammond and May joined forces to ‘choose’ a slogan for the third series, while Clarkson drove through the Alps. Eventually, they decided on a phrase that is “snappy, plain talking, simple, clear”.
