A scene in a Fireman Sam episode which appeared to show a character treading on a page of the Koran won’t be investigated by Ofcom.

The episode, first broadcast on Channel 5 in 2014, featured a scene of a fireman slipping on several papers which flew up in the air – one of which appeared to feature Arabic writing.

The error was spotted earlier in 2016, sparking 170 Ofcom complaints.

However, Ofcom said that they could not confirm that the page was from the Koran.

"We studied a recording of the programme in the highest possible resolution," a spokesperson said.

"We found that the page did appear to contain Arabic text, but its contents could not have been deciphered, nor recognised as being from a given text."

A spokesperson from Mattel said: "It's just an unfortunate incident where someone from the production company thought they were just putting in random text.

"We have no reason to believe it was done maliciously."

The episode is set to be removed from circulation, while Mattel are “no longer working with the animation studio responsible”.
