Top 5 comedy gigs

Alun Cochrane is a naturally gifted storyteller.
10 April 2012

Lanky northerner Alun Cochrane will be offering Comedy with Sad Bits at the Soho Theatre, Jo Caulfield will be holding forth on whatever subjects vex her and the Hackney Empire will be hosting its New Act of the Year...

Alun Cochrane
Soho Theatre, W1
This lanky northerner's show might be called Comedy with Sad Bits, but there is considerably more laughter than tragedy here. Cochrane is an instantly cherishable, naturally gifted storyteller, whether bringing mundane tales of shopping trips to IKEA alive or discussing his childhood being brought up by a hardcore feminist mum. (0870 429 6883) Until Sat 18 Feb, 8pm.

Jo Caulfield
Arts Depot, N1
Caulfield has built up a cult following thanks to her Radio 4 series, and her live gigs always raise smiles. She's a classical comedian, simply holding forth on whatever subjects vex her. She has a veritable armoury of put-downs, so heckle at your peril. (020 8449 0048) Fri 17 Feb, 8pm.

Hackney Empire New Act of the Year
Hackney Empire, E8
The talent that has risen through Hackney's talent quest ranks ranges from Alan Davies to Harry Enfield via David Baddiel. Recent standards have been pretty high too, and this remains a great, budget-friendly chance to see some future stars. (020 8985 2424) Sat 18 Feb, 8pm.

Rain Pryor
Pizza Express, W1
Comedy legend Richard Pryor's daughter made her UK debut at 2005's Edinburgh Festival. If only her show had been billed as musical theatre, the comedy critics might have appreciated its mix of sentimentality and songs. This undeniably gifted performer is now back and we are promised a greater comedy element, so expectation is high again. (020 7439 8722) Sun 19-Wed 22 Feb, 7.30pm.

Simon Amstell
Pleasance Theatre, N1
Waspish comic Amstell is best known as the host of C4's Popworld slot, but he has recently quit to pursue other avenues. Catch him during this Sunday residency where he may well reveal things about the stars he has interviewed that C4's lawyers would never have let him air on air. Special guest this week is comedy libertine Russell Brand.(020 8609 1800) Sun 19 Feb.
