Spacey slams critics

Old Vic supremo Kevin Spacey hit out at his critics today, claiming they do not understand the artistic remit of the theatre.

He said: "I don't think people have an idea of what our artistic ambitions are. I don't think people realise what it takes to organise a schedule - it's not easy."

He defended his previous choice of plays: "I took a long, hard look at what had happened in this theatre before and I decided not to begin with the classics."

He also denied he was playing it safe with his new season which includes two Shakespeare productions.
