A musical version of Sleepless in Seattle is the first new show to announce performances since theatres closed earlier this year.

Jay McGuiness and Kimberly Walsh will star in the world premiere of Sleepless, which opens at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre on September 1, pending government advice.

Theatres remain unable to stage productions to live audiences under the current lockdown rules, which will ease for restaurants, pubs and museums from July 4.

Sleepless was due to begin performances in March, prior to the government shutdown of theatres. It will open with socially distanced audiences, who will be temperature-checked on arrival and required to wear facemasks.

A gala will take place on August 27, which will allow for NHS and care workers to see the show for free.

McGuiness and Walsh reunite after starring together in the musical production of Big in the West End last year. The show, directed by Morgan Young, has a book by Michael Burdette and music and lyrics by Robert Scott and Brendan Cull.

Producer Michael Rose said: “Lockdown has affected and frightened a huge number of people in this country – particularly in our industry. Our story in Sleepless deals with mending something that is broken. It's about putting a family back together after a loss, and we feel it’s time to do exactly that. It’s time to start the healing process – that’s part of what we do in theatre.”
