The musical director of the English National Opera, Mark Wigglesworth, is leaving the company.

He told staff that the ENO, which recently lost millions of pounds in Arts Council funding, was “evolving now into something I do not recognise”.

Since last January the ENO has lost its chief executive, artistic director and chairman. A spokesman for campaign group Save ENO said: “I don’t think you can underestimate what a blow it is. Mark was the jewel in their crown and his departure means there is now no one at the top who knows what it means to stand in the pit, to play an instrument or sing.”

ENO is to announce its plans for the future in May. It is expected to reduce the number of shows it puts on.
