Cate Blanchett will make a return to the London stage in a new play by Martin Crimp.

Making her National Theatre debut, the two-time Academy Award winner is joined by Stephen Dillane who is back at the theatre for the first time since starring in The Coast of Utopia in 2002.

Crimp’s play, When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other: Twelve Variations on Samuel Richardson’s Pamela, will be directed by Katie Mitchell, and explores the "messy, often violent nature of desire" and the complicated roles women and men play.

Five characters will act out games of sexual domination and resistance, with a nod to Richardson’s 1740 novel.

Blanchett last graced the London stage in 2012 when she starred as Lotte in Big and Small at the Barbican.

Mitchell, who directed Sarah Kane's Cleansed at the National Theatre two years ago, said: “It's great to be working with Martin again on this powerful new text and to continue my special collaboration with Stephen Dillane. At the same time I'm delighted to welcome Cate Blanchett to the National, and look forward to developing a new working relationship with this extraordinary actor.”

Tickets will go on sale in autumn this year.
