Acorn Antiques - the musical!

The ladies from Acorn Antiques are back

Victoria Wood and Julie Walters are set to revive their classic soap spoof Acorn Antiques in a musical version that will arrive in the West End next year.

The pair will be joined not only by regular co-stars Celia Imrie and Duncan Preston, but Neil Morrissey and Josie Lawrence will also appear.

The musical, which will be directed by Trevor Nunn, was delayed for more than three years because of the break-up of Wood's marriage to magician Geoffrey Durham.

Acorn Antiques first appeared as part of the show Victoria Wood - As Seen On TV and became a firm favourite with viewers as it spoofed the bad acting and wobbly scenery of soap operas such as Crossroads.

The musical will open at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket, on 9 February. Wood said: "It's completely different from the TV show but the characters are all there. The flavour is the same."

Veteran film and stage actress Walters will play Mrs Overall for six shows a week, and Wood for two.

"I didn't want to be in it at all, but I think Julie was worried about the sheer slog of it," confessed the comic. "Singing and dancing with a tray in a pinny is tough work for ladies of a certain age. But I was so delighted that she said yes."

The 51-year-old added: "Thankfully I've been so completely involved in writing this for months and months - everything including lyrics, music, script, casting.

"It's such a big project I think it will only dawn on me nearer to the first night that I have to actually get up there and dance."

Morrissey has been cast as a wicked loan shark while Lawrence will appear as a ruthless coffee shop owner.

Wood promises a mixture of her trademark comic ditties along with big showstoppers and ballads.

She said: "I love the energy of musicals, they're so positive and cheerful. If we can deliver that I'll be delighted."
