A new short film created by artist Zineb Sedira reveals old Tube maps created by a TfL retiree, as part of Art on the Underground.

The short film is part of a new series titled Collecting Lines exploring the Victoria line and will be on display in stations along the line until the end of December.

Phil Roe, who recently retired from 42 years of service at Transport for London and hand drew some of the maps himself, said: “I have a big interest in the Underground – I’ve built up quite a collection of maps and leaflets over the years.

“It’s a collection that I do for myself, my pleasure.

“Why would anyone want a load of maps? Maps tell a story. Maps give you history. A map is a picture of London – they tell me more about London than most books do.”

Phil Roe shares one of his own, personal maps of the Underground

Brixton-based artist Sedira said the film aims to explore the Victoria line from unusual perspectives.

She said: “I wanted to connect both visually and metaphorically with the Underground.

“As I began my research I was drawn to rails, maps and tunnels, to the hidden cables and Tube trains. These formed the basis of my idea, bringing together routes, maps and trains, representing them in unusual ways.

“A recurring theme in my work is the notion of journeying, and how personal recollection plays a part in that.”

Drawing and Collecting Maps will be screened alongside The End of the Line at Kings Cross Station in the Northern ticket hall until the end of December.
