As you might expect from identical twin sisters who recorded a song titled Everything Is Awesome!!! for the Lego Movie, Tegan and Sara’s eighth album is a relentlessly perky pop collection.

Having dropped guitars in search of sales on their 2013 breakthrough record, Heartthrob, the Canadian duo stick with the slick sound they credit to the influence of Taylor Swift.

Long-term fans might miss the indierock but their glossy tunes can still contain biting lyrics: Boyfriend is gender-twisting synthpop about Sara Quin’s love triangle involving a woman who was still seeing a man.

It’s hard to fault the twins’ sharp songwriting, though it’s a perfectly polished album you’ll probably like yet never really love.
