Emeli Sandé interview: ‘There’s no point trying to be cool — just dance’

Award winner: Emeli Sandé talks Ronnie Scott’s and superfans

Singer-songwriter Emeli Sandé, 31, is a four-time Brit Award winner who was raised in Aberdeenshire but calls London home. Ever since she performed at the Olympics opening and closing ceremonies in 2012, the city has held a particular significance for her — last year she recorded a charity single for Grenfell Tower victims with Stormzy and Pixie Lott. She lives in Bethnal Green and hopes to release a new album this summer.

Who would you like to go on a night out with?

Andre 3000. We’d go to Ronnie Scott’s or something.

Best hangover cure?

I’m addicted to Peep Show. I’ll binge watch that for three hours with a fried egg sandwich.

What will you be doing instead of Glastonbury this year?

I’ll probably be inside a dark studio somewhere finishing my album.

Who do you call when you’re bored?

My sister, Lucy. She’s two years younger than me but a lot wiser.

What’s your Uber rating?

4.6 or something. I don’t know what I’ve done.

Song that never fails to get you dancing?

Whitney Houston, I Wanna Dance With Somebody. There’s no point trying to be cool, you just dance.

Meanest tweet you’ve ever received?

“Who did you sleep with to perform at the Olympics twice?”

The best London music festivals of 2018

1/11

Strangest thing a fan has sent you?

One guy sent me a topless signed picture of himself. I have it up in my house in the living room.

What would you like your fans to be called?

The Sandettes.

This time next year I’ll be…

Hopefully touring the new album.
