The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

Jacques Demy's 1964 musical fantasia still comes up freshly, with every word of it sung.

Performances from Catherine Deneuve, Nino Castelnuova and Anne Vernon inflate the life and adventures of an ordinary shop girl (Deneuve) into a fantasy that has been called poetic realism by its many fans and banal whimsy by those less sure of its charms.

Fine music from Michel Legrand helps and so does direction from Demy that engenders considerable magic.
