The Myth of the American Sleepover - review

Derek Malcolm31 August 2012

Nicely acted, beautifully shot, ultimately disappointing small-town/young-love indie drama that makes you think — longingly — of superior films such as Gregory’s Girl and Dazed and Confused.

Over one long, hot summer night, various photogenic kids in Michigan pick the wrong objects of desire, mill around, then realise their mistake just in time for the smile-stuffed finale. You will see the words “honest”, “original” and “tender” applied to David Robert Mitchell’s debut. Sorry to spoil the party, but “contrived”, “implausible” and “goddam irritating” are closer to the mark.
