High concept

Plotline Cold-hearted super-soldier Kurt Russell gets involved with a peace-loving community when their barren planet is infested by a new breed of genetically engineered squaddies (led by Jason Scott Lee).

Back to the future Previously, writer David Webb Peoples gave us future shocks like Blade Runner and Twelve Monkeys. Cinematographer David Tattersall worked on the forthcoming Star Wars prequel.

War memorial Russell's medals include the Plissken Patch - an in-joke wink at his gallantry as Snake Plissken in Escape From New York.

Distinguished service Actually he deserves a medal for Soldier. He broke an ankle during filming, and almost came to blows with Lee when the latter wanted to dictate fight scenes. And, of course, he's had to dodge flak from the film's critics.

In space no one can hear you When it came to dialogue, Kurt had less of a battle. He's blissfully silent most of the time.

Verdicts 'Kurt Russell escaped from New York but he can't escape the combat clunker Soldier' - New York Post. 'Moral points are lost behind a barrage of music-video violence' - New York Daily News.
