Must-see movies revealed

10 April 2012

Movie experts have named the 50 films you should see before you die. Number one is Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 Vietnam War classic Apocalypse Now.

The list was compiled by a panel of movie experts to mark the free-to-air launch of Film4.

Few of the entries are big screen blockbusters. Second is The Apartment, Billy Wilder's 1960 comedy drama starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine.

Brazilian film City of God is third, followed by Roman Polanski's Chinatown.
Sexy beast, starring Ray Winstone and Sir Ben Kingsley, is fifth.

The top 10 is completed by 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest, French flick A Bout de Souffle, Donnie Darko and Woody Allen's Manhattan.

Alien, Lost in Translation and The Shawshank Redemption just missed out on a top 10 place.

The top 50 includes Pulp Fiction, Trainspotting, Erin Brockovich, The Breakfast Club and Scarface.

The list was chosen by a panel of experts including Lord Puttnam, producer of Chariots of Fire and Midnight Express.
