Fiennes misses film honour

Winner: Ralph Fiennes was absent from the award ceremony

Ralph Fiennes was named best British actor at the London Film Critics' Circle awards for his role in The Constant Gardener.

Fiennes, 43, who has recently split from his 61-year-old partner Francesca Annis, was not at the awards. Rachel Weisz, 34, was named best British actress for her role in the political thriller.

The Constant Gardener also took the Attenborough Award for British film of the year, while the British producer title went to The Constant Gardener's Simon Channing-Williams.

Brokeback Mountain got film of the year and director of the year for Ang Lee.

Downfall, the story of Hitler's final days, won best foreign language film as well as best foreign actor for Bruno Ganz.

Naomi Watts was named best actress for her role in King Kong. Pride and Prejudice won two awards, British director for Joe Wright and best supporting actor for Tom Hollander for his role as George.

British newcomer prize went to Kelly Reilly who played a showgirl at the Windmill Theatre in Mrs Henderson Presents. Thandie Newton got best supporting actress for Crash.
