Brolin for president

10 April 2012

The husband of outspoken Democrat supporter Barbra Streisand is to play Republican icon Ronald Reagan in a new film about the former US President.

James Brolin will portray Reagan's eight years in office, his marriage to Nancy and the couple's troubled relationship with their children.

"We haven't asked Barbra Streisand what she thinks about James Brolin playing Ronald Reagan but we'll have to live with that," said Leslie Moonves, chairman of US network CBS which is making the film.

Streisand was a fierce critic of Reagan's policies after he took office in 1980.

She once lampooned his administration at a Democrat convention by singing Send Home the Clowns, a send up of one her hits.

In 1992, she said she would "never forgive" Reagan, once a Hollywood star himself, for his stance on Aids research and education.

Brolin has previously starred as a Republican governor in the political drama The West Wing.

The Reagans is due to be screened in the US in November. Mr Moonves said it would give a balanced account of the former President, who now suffers from Alzheimer's disease.
