BFI London Film Festival: Hidden gem of the day – Orange Sunshine

Nick Roddick picks his lesser known must-see for Saturday October 15
Gorgeous: Orange Sunshine
Nick Roddick14 October 2016

Started by a bunch of surfers who liked to do drugs, Orange Sunshine chronicles the birth, growth and inevitable demise of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love, part conscious-raising group (“Our duty was to turn the world on”), part hugely successful if ramshackle business operation, which started in California in the late 1960s and at its peak (130 million tabs of acid, anyone?) made Howard Marks look like an amateur.

Using still photos, modern-day talking heads and gorgeous re-enactments, the film is a jaw-dropping piece of social history. It’s also a lot of fun, with some tears along the way. Did someone say ‘trip’?

Showing: Vue West End 5, 15:15
