Amer is deliberately bonkers

10 April 2012

You’ve heard of neo-noir; here’s a thriller that’s neo-naff. Art house Belgian film-makers Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani pay homage to the Giallo genre with a female-on-the-edge mystery that’s deliberately bonkers.

A sour kid called Ana tussles with a corpse in a French Riviera mansion; as a pouting teen, she’s made breathless by bikers; as an adult (Marie Bos), she returns home, to find the past cuts like a knife Some images (which owe as much to Buñuel, Brakhage or Polanski as Giallo luminary Dario Argento) are fabulous. And the grubby, "dated" vibe is spot-on. Still, unless you’re already a fan of the genre, this experiment may leave you cold.
