This superb exhibition opens with an image of an electric guitar flying through a haze of stage lighting, capturing a signature Pete Townshend gesture with The Who in the Seventies.

Of the 80 photographs from Michael Putland, most are hand-printed in black and white. They include pictures of Tina Turner, Frank Zappa, Motörhead and Prince.

In many locations, Putland worked closely with subjects: Bryan Ferry in tennis whites; Bowie emerging from home in Beckenham. Emotion exudes from a photograph of Nina Simone on the David Frost TV show in 1968.

Photographs of the Rolling Stones are a mix of heyday performances and informal scenes, such as a moment in their tour bus where Mick and Bianca Jagger sleep unaware, like kittens.

Group shots, such as the Clash posturing like James Deans in New York’s dockyard, contrast with Putland’s carefully posed portrait of classical composer Arvo Pärt.

A surprise appears on an image of a Who concert performance where Putland has painted the frame bright red — a homage, he says, to the iconic photograph painter, William Klein.
