Paperback: The Anatomy of Violence by Adrian Raine (Penguin, £10.99)

William Leith6 February 2014

A man breaks into an apartment block in Denver, Colorado. He’s intending to rob the place. Then one of the residents arrives. After this, something truly appalling happens. When the guy entered the building, he was thinking like a burglar. But, for some reason, now he’s thinking like a rapist and killer. Something has snapped inside his head. Adrian Raine, an Ivy League professor who has interviewed lots of killers, is an expert on what makes people snap. This is an impressive study of what drives people to kill by an author who knows what he’s talking about.
