Dear Ms Greene - I am writing this in a newspaper and on the internet in the safe knowledge that it will reach you more quickly than if I had used the Royal Mail.

I am expressing my surprise and concern that you and your communications team have chosen, on this your first interim management statement, to talk to neither the City nor to the press.

You must have short memories. It is only three months since City institutions and private punters put up a total of £1.7 billion to buy most of your business from the state.

No one who bought those shares has cause for complaint, given how badly they were underpriced. But surely your new owners deserve to hear from the horse’s mouth how their business is doing. After all, as the prospectus made clear, post is not an easy game.

So don’t rely on my vote when you go in for that bumper pay rise.

Yours sincerely,

Nick Goodway
