City Spy: Eric Born free to grapple with role at Swissport

Outgoing Wincanton chief Eric Born can not only offer his successor Adrian Colman wisdom on lorries and warehouses, but also teach him a thing or two about high-kicking his competitors out of the picture.

Literally. Spy is reminded that before the glamorous world of logistics, Born was a judo star.

He was in fact a World judo championships silver medalist and competed in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics

No doubt he can use these skills to gain a black belt in his next move as he flies over to Swissport International.

What's Sir Ken Morrisons' beef?

Spy headed up to Bradford for Morrisons’ annual meeting yesterday to see whether Sir Ken Morrison would give more publicity to his herd of bullocks.

Alas, he behaved himself this year but Spy inquired how the cattle were doing since their public profile was raised.

“Not so good,” Sir Ken replied. “It’s hard work.”

Spy wonders whether his public backing of the new chairman and chief executive might be a ploy to flog the supermarket some more tasty beef?

Dressed in suitably techie manner — suit, trainers and a trendy hairstyle — Spy mingled with Europe’s tech elite at last night’s Digital Masters Awards Freemasons’ Hall in Covent Garden.

Shazam, Spotify and Soundcloud all nabbed awards, presented by the Beeb’s Emily Maitlis.

Online clothing retailer Farfetch was big winner with a fistful of gongs.

Unfortunately there was no sign of former stock-market darling Asos on the shortlist to politely clap its rival to the stage.
