The Crown Estate, which runs the property empire owned by the Queen, is the first national landlord to make a Living Wage commitment.
It means everyone working for the business receives a minimum hourly wage of £9.15 per hour in London and £7.85 per hour outside London. The national minimum wage is £6.50.
“We want to underline our commitment to our talented employees who work across a diverse range of sectors from London’s West End and regional retail, through to offshore wind and strategic land,” said Alison Nimmo, chief executive of The Crown Estate.
The firm which owns swathes of buildings on Regent Street and in St James’s, delivers 100% of its annual profits to the Treasury for the benefit of the public finances.
Rhys Moore, director, Living Wage Foundation said he hoped the latest deal would “encourage far more interest in the Living Wage from the property development and land management sector”.
It is one of very few businesses in the property industry to become a Living Wage employer, and joins London developer Canary Wharf Group which was accredited last September.
