The man who found Tesco its new chief executive and chairman has decided his work is done at the retailer.
Britain's biggest supermarket has announced that Patrick Cescau, its senior independent director, will step down on April 7.
He will be replaced by Compass Group chief executive Richard Cousins.
Cescau, a former chief executive of Unilever who was once seen as a candidate for Tesco chairman himself, has spent six-years on the grocer's board.
He led the overhaul of Tesco's senior management following a series of profit warnings and the discovery of a £263 million accounting scandal.
He recruited Dave Lewis, also a former Unilever man, as chief executive and John Allan as chairman.
His departure comes just weeks after a number of other non-executive directors, including Liv Garfield and Jacqueline Tammenoms Bakker, left the retailer.
Cescau reportedly believes Lewis, who has already unveiled drastic turnaround measures including store closures and job cuts, would benefit from having a new team around him.
Cescau also holds non-executive roles at InterContinental Hotels Group and British Airways-owner International Airlines Group.
