Stobart drives into new businesses as profits edge up

Driven down: The shares fall will make a £120 million fundraiser more difficult

Haulage and logistics firm Stobart Group is to drive into the legal sector with the launch of a new barrister service.

Stobart, which reported that turnover rose from £500.4m to £551.9m and underlying profit before tax was £35.2m compared to £34.5m in the previous year, said it will launch Stobart Barristers division.

The business will link individuals and businesses directly to an expert without them needing to employ a solicitor.

The division will be led by the group’s legal director Trevor Howarth.

It hopes Stobart's fixed-fee model will reassure people who are put off taking legal action due to uncertainties over costs.

Howarth said: “Consumers don’t know where to look or which barrister to pick, leaving many to still having to rely on the advice of their solicitor. “But in doing so they are forced to pay significant fees. Our model cuts out waste and opens up access to a national panel of barristers that are selected for their ability to meet our clients’ needs."
