TV and film streaming service Netflix plans to expand its operations in Europe, entering another six countries by the end of this year.

The US firm said it would open up in Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and Luxembourg. Analysts cautioned that the success of the move would depend in part on how much Netflix spent on dubbing progammes and films for European audiences.

Smartphones move a boost for Lenovo

Chinese tech giant Lenovo today announced a 29% jump in annual net profits to $819.7 million (£487.1 million), helped by its bet on smartphones. Lenovo, now the world’s fourth-biggest smartphones vendor, made the move to shore up falls in its personal computers division. In January it made a $2.9 billion deal to buy the Motorola Mobility phone unit from Google.

New optimism lifts Telecom Plus

Shares in utilities reseller Telecoms Plus leaped 156p, or 11%, to 1526p, after it forecast a near-50% profits leap in the current year.

The company reported a 25% rise in pre-tax profit at £44.6 million for the year to end-March, helped by a rise in customer base and an initial contribution from new energy-supply arrangements with npower.

Chief executive Andrew Lindsay said he was comfortable with profits forecast at £63 million this year.
