French Connection is eyeing a raft of openings in train stations after a fruitful venture within Old Street tube station as the fashion retailer today revealed its turnaround plan is gathering pace.

The firm last month opened a pop-up shop in the east London station and its chief Stephen Marks said the store had performed strongly.

He said: “The demographic is very much our customer, we should have a standalone store there. We are now looking at whether railway stations could work.”

Marks said he would consider taking space in the redeveloped Euston station. However, he said the London market has been “softer” than the rest of the country.

French Connection today posted a first-half loss of £3.9 million, an improvement on a £6.1 million loss last year. It is the third consecutive half of improved performance.

However, shares dived more than 7% to 65p.

Marks’ turnaround plan has involved investing in design teams, growing wholesale and shutting unprofitable shops. However it is still struggling to shut the seven remaining stores of 15 it identified it wanted to close two years ago.

It has re-ignited its international ambitions with new stores planned in Germany, the Netherlands and Spain after a seven-year hiatus from international expansion.
